Academic publishing business models: self-citations and the selectivity-reputation trade-off
“we investigate the citation flows of 8,360 journals from the 20 largest for-profit publishers…we find compelling evidence of Journal Impact Factor inflation for the two largest APC publishers…their journals display extremely high self-citations rates specifically to articles that contribute to the calculation of the JIF”
