Day25 Risk 📊

Rates of poor mental health are increasing – especially among young people, raising concerns about impacts on their health and employment prospects.

Missing out on early job experience makes it harder to build skills, secure stable work and progress to better-paid roles – without action, this will become a major challenge for the next generation.

Line chart titled

Line chart titled "Rates of poor mental health are on the rise, especially among young adults" shows trends from 2008–2023 in the UK and England. Data from four sources—Labour Force Survey, Health Records, Health Survey for England, and Understanding Society—track reported mental health conditions by age group. Across all panels, the 16–34 (or 20–34) age group (in red) shows the steepest rise in mental health issues, increasing from around 3–6% in 2008 to over 13–15% in 2023. Older age groups (35–64) show smaller increases, displayed in grey. Data Sources: ONS Labour Force Survey (2023), Clinical Practice Research Datalink (CPRD), NHS Digital Health Survey for England (2023), and University of Essex’s Understanding Society (2010–2022).
