On Saturday we went to an early Juneteenth celebration at Montpelier, the home of former US president James Madison. In Madison's time, Montpelier was also home to hundreds of enslaved people, many of them now buried in unmarked graves. Today, the descendants of the enslaved are full partners in running Montpelier as a historic site and museum. A libation ceremony honoring dead ancestors was a part of Saturday's activities.

A rectangular sign suspended from a rope across a trail. The sign says: SACRED SPACE Montpelier Burial Ground of the Enslaved MONTPELIER DESCENDANTS COMMITTEE [superimposed on large letters "MDC", with a dome above the D that echoes the dome above the icehouse at Montpelier] [a row of symbols indicating: no littering, no pets, no walking, no smoking] Please honor and respect those buried in this place.

A woman dressed in white (Rashida Kirton, of the Montpelier Descendants Committee) stands outdoors in bright sunlight in front of rows of people seated in chairs. Behind her we see a green wooded area (part of the burial ground). In one hand the woman holds an open book. In the other hand she holds a clear glass bottle full of water. She is pouring water from the bottle onto the ground.
