I wrote a letter to Donald #Knuth. Fingers crossed that he replies!
A handwritten note an a half-sheet of paper: Professor Knuth, Sorry to bother you, but this question has been bothering me for 6 years since my undergrad and I am unsure how else to find the answer: In you 1965 paper "On the Translation of Languages from Left to Right" you use a symbol "[a sideways T]" (In my copy of the paper, it is introduced on the 4th page, makes as page 610).
