For the longest time, I had 128k CBR MP3s of everything I owned on CD.
Then I re-ripped like back in 2013, to FLAC and also ripped the MP3s to VBR (although file(1) is telling some lies)
The theory is that I can make better lossy files from the FLAC ones if I ever need to.
I didn't even have most of my stuff as even low-rate MP3 until I got that CD Discman that also ran MP3s, in 2003 (replaced months later with an iPod)
