A question that van der Kolk likes to ask his trauma patients is: "who did you feel safe with as a child?" - because this is a good starting point for therapy.
I have long thought about this. I don't know. How would I have known as a child that I felt safe with someone? What is it like to really feel safe with a person? Does it mean I can go to sleep next to them? Is it when I feel I could tell them my secrets? Or merely when I don't expect them to hit me? A person I long to be with?
