This is an anonymous portrait of Augusta Dorothea of Brunswick-Wolfenbüttel (1666-1751), a princess in one of those tiny German states before unification. She had no kids and outlived her husband by 35 years, which she spent collecting dolls, not really as toys but as a model of baroque society. I hope to see her Puppethaus one day in the New Palace in Arnstadt. But her real importance to history, science, and art was as the key patron of Franz Rösel von Rosenhof! Sine qua non. More on him soon.
