Whilst more recently, Sunbury local trains were run by H sets or VLocity railcars, in the 1980s they were sometimes, as on this day, cobbled together from some fairly unsuitable rolling stock. The Y class shunting locos are 480kW diesels with a maximum speed of 65km/h. Not ideally suited to passenger trains, they were rostered on services like this only when nothing else was available, and given that this was December, it is likely that much of the loco fleet was busy hauling the grain harvest
