The argument against higher taxes is that the private sector more efficiently allocates scarce resources (in this case, capital) than the federal government.
But that argument has its flaws, because sometimes that capital is *not* allocated very well (see above), and meanwhile some of society's basic needs are going unmet. The right question is whether we are taxing enough to build the kind of society we want to live in.
