One might summarise the previous century in that it was the fastest changing time for art and music mankind has seen. Jazz was following Scott Joplin’s ragtimes and Stravinsky wrote his Rite of Spring in 1913, the year of one of the early cubist paintings, The Smoker by Juan Gris (1887–1927).
It was painted in Céret in the Pyrénées, where Braque and Picasso also were working on cubism, together igniting one of the sparks of the artistic explosion of the century.
