Kudos where kudos are due. Social Security (within one day of receipt of the death notification from funeral people, for FIL) had automatically switched MIL to her survivor benefits and also included the one-time benefit of $250. NOTHING for me to do.
Now that $250 isn't going to cover much of anything, except perhaps original death certificates, but still. They did it in ONE DAY. Very pleased with modern systems talking to systems.
