My impression:
Many instant #messaging
comparison guides focus on features, security aspects (e.g. encryption), and user numbers.
Please keep in mind to add freedom as a criteria when you have to choose a messaging solution.
You should always be able to switch
- your instant messaging provider
- your instant messaging app
if you want to (e.g. if your provider changes the terms of use).
And (after switching) you should still be able to communicate with your friends (using the new app/provider).
