Scarcity does serve a purpose in abstract economies. It stabilizes rates of exchange and discourages hoarding.
But scarcity has completely malfunctioned when most people are too poor to have the handful of minor luxuries they want most.
Some people want a guitar. Some want a motorcycle. Some want fancy ingredients to cook with. Some want a foreign language tutor.
Everyone should be able to afford one or two of these things.
