As for the theft, you can get insured for $25 a month or so (but the number of exceptions in the contract is…not encouraging) and a good angle-grinder-resistant D-lock costs 100-300 USD. Also, there are nonprofits like bikeindex.org that can help you get your bike back IF the thief tries to sell it to someone who (1) knows about BikeIndex and (2) cares to check it.
Still, bicycle theft is an underaddressed epidemic and it shouldn’t all be on individual riders to mitigate it.
